My friends spent 3 days skiing and climbing in the
Matterhorn Peak area. I keep a low profile and stayed for 2 days only. Very
nice area, jagged peaks all over the place separated by steep couloirs for
skiing... We set up camp in a basin between Matterhorn Peak and Twin Peaks.
10 of us went up, including Paul, Dan, Anne-Laure, Eric Pape, Dave, Jernej,
Debrah, Eric Wintenberger and Brett. It was fun winter camping with all these
guys!! On the first day we got to our campsite around 11 am and started digging
platforms for the tents. I started a strenuous 6 hour digging of a snowcave!
Around 1 pm, after a good lunch, Dave, Paul and Eric headed up towards Matterhorn
Peak, with the objective of skiing the East Couloir. However, the East Couloir
wasn't in condition and we ended up skiing the very nice Ski Dreams, which
is the gully just east of it.On the next day I went to this couloir with
Paul. Going to the top was very nice, involving some very easy scrambling
on rock from the top of the couloir. The top of the peak is very impressive
and it's fun to be able to get there via an easy route. The snow was average,
very variable but we still had some nice turns!
