Mount Tom is the prominent, massive peak that overlooks
Bishop. It is a big mountain which is not very interesting for climbing,
because the rock is rotten, but it bears a very classic backcountry ski route,
the Elderberry Canyon. It is a curving bowl going to the base of the summit
head wall, and is visible when driving from Mammoth to Bishop. Javier, Olivier
and I skied it in May 2000. We had a very interesting 4-wheel drive experience
with Javier's old 1974 Ford boat on the very bumpy road to the trailhead.
From there on, we hiked for about 1 hour before putting the skis on and ascending.
It is a long ski trip (about 6000' elevation gain). We made it top the summit
ridge but did not go to the summit as it was getting late and the couloirs
we could ski from the top were dangerous avalanchewise that day. We skied
down the ascent route and had a great time taking turns in the Elderberry
Canyon. The snow was deep and a bit heavy, but very enjoyable.
